When Ashley and Shea Coleman settled down to start a family they noticed that finding a single, one stop shop to buy local was impossible to find. Taking matters into their own hands, they founded BE WELLness, Clear Lake, a health and wellness cooperative encouraging healthy and local eating in North Iowa. Established just three years ago, BE WELLness is proud to have four excellent employees working under the family owned business. BE WELLness makes it a priority to source their “specialty” market with local food. Depending on the season, 30-50% of BE WELLness inventory is locally produce (within 150 miles) of Clear Lake.
The market is a host to a wide variety of produce and more. From greens, to eggs, meat to yogurt, BE WELLness prides themselves in bridging the gap for the local food needs in North Iowa and serving as an outlet for many local farmers to sell their products. They also work closely with North Iowa Fresh, who provides them the majority of their produce. They even carry a wide selection of shelf safe items such as popcorn, sauces and granola. BE WELLness is very specific about the products they carry, offering their consumers gluten and chemical free options…just to name a few!
BE WELLness also features a small café in the back of their store. This café makes delicious dishes using foods being sold in the front. Open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., they pride themselves in helping people explore new ways to eat healthy.
“Sometimes people believe that because we’re a specialty market, they think our products will be expensive, but that’s not the case,” says BE WELLness owner, Ashley Coleman. In fact, they are so confident in their prices that BE WELLness offers price matching. “We’re definitely affordable, but we’re not cheap. We are providing high quality, wholesome food at an appropriate price.”
Ashley, her family and the team at BE WELLness, Clear Lake hopes to inspire other North Iowans to eat healthy and shop local. Be sure to visit them at 107 S 4th St. in Clear Lake. They are open Tuesday-Friday from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. They can also be found at the Clear Lake Farmers Market on Saturdays from 9 a.m. – noon where they re-sell local products and offer a variety of deliciously prepared foods from their café.
